Are these platforms legitimate?

Yes. Mercor is backed by major venture capital firms with a verified track record of paying contractors. Handshake is an established company partnered with 1,500+ universities. Outlier is operated by Scale AI, a $13B+ enterprise. "Legitimate" doesn't mean "perfect" — all three have trade-offs, covered in the individual reviews. Do your own due diligence as well.

Do I need a college degree?

It depends. Handshake AI primarily targets people with university affiliations, especially graduate students. Mercor generally looks for meaningful professional experience. Outlier accepts applicants based on assessment performance, so strong skills can outweigh formal credentials. A degree — especially graduate-level — opens more doors and higher pay, but it's not universally required.

How much will I actually make?

There's no honest single answer. It depends on platform, project, qualifications, location, and availability. Some people earn meaningful supplemental income; others apply and never receive project invitations. The ranges on this site reflect platform reports and third-party reviews — not what any individual should expect as a guarantee.

Is this a scam?

The platforms in this guide are not scams. The broader "remote work" space does attract scammers, though. Red flags: any platform asking you to pay money upfront, requesting sensitive financial information before hiring, guaranteeing specific income, or contacting you unsolicited with offers that sound too good to be true. Legitimate platforms have verifiable company information and never charge to apply.

Can I do this part-time?

Yes. All three platforms offer flexible scheduling, and most roles are structured as independent-contractor work. Many people do this alongside other employment. Some projects have weekly minimum hours — those details show up before you accept.

Do I need to be in the United States?

Not necessarily. Mercor and Outlier work with talent globally, though some projects have regional restrictions and pay can vary by location. Handshake AI's network is primarily US and Europe-based. Check each platform's current requirements.

How is this different from Upwork or Fiverr?

Mercor, Handshake AI, and Outlier are specialized for AI-related work. They set pay rates rather than making freelancers bid against each other, use matching algorithms, and work directly with AI companies. The application is more selective, but you don't compete on price — and pay is generally higher.

Will AI replace this work soon?

Probably not in the way people fear. The whole reason these platforms exist is that AI models still need human judgment to be reliable — and as models get more capable, the bar for what counts as useful human feedback rises with them. The work is more likely to evolve toward higher-skill review than to disappear.
